Introduction
In 2011 my wife and I visited the UK and it changed our lives forever. We became enamoured with the UK’s friendly and reserved culture, along with its sophisticated lifestyle, and realised that it was time to move far away from the US. During our holiday in England it became apparent to us that our easy-going personalities were a fine match with European culture and that we would enjoy the challenge of starting new careers in the UK. In June 2014 my wife accepted a job at Dorset County Hospital under the UK's Shortage Occupation Scheme and I was able to secure a spousal work visa, which allowed me to begin a new career in the UK. We moved to Dorchester in September 2014 and have never regretted a thing. In October 2019 we were granted permanent UK residency, which gives us both the freedom to work in any UK job without restrictions or work permits.
Throughout my life I was told that US culture was the best in the world. After visiting several other countries between 2011-12, I discovered this was simply not true. After living the 'American Dream' (working 60+ hours per week just so I could buy more stuff), my travels to other countries helped me realise that the American Dream was not my dream. So my wife and I made plans to radically change our lives. We sold our house in 2012 in preparation to relocate far away from North Carolina, US. Over the next two years (and after I had a brief battle with cancer in early 2013) we began ‘interviewing’ several other cities where we could move including London; Dorchester; Oxford; Dublin; Vancouver, BC; Toronto, Ontario; New York City; Washington, DC; Portland, Oregon; Seattle, Washington; and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After visiting these cities we felt our personalities matched Dorset County best.
